About Island of Serenity
A single large tree fills the right half of the canvas, built from thick slabs of crimson, maroon and scarlet with small flecks of orange and pale blue breaking through the canopy like light. Behind it the sky is a flat, chalky cream, scraped thin so the weave shows. To the left a low band of orange-red trees runs along the horizon above a strip of pale gold water. The foreground is a field of emerald and deep green strokes, laid down in long horizontal sweeps with a loaded brush and knife.
The mood is warm and still, an autumn field at the end of the day, with the red canopy doing all the talking against quiet cream and green.
Suits a living room with white or pale grey walls, where the red canopy reads as the only strong colour in the room. Works above a linen sofa, a timber sideboard or a dining table with green or cream ceramics. Pairs with oak and rattan furniture, and with plants that echo the emerald foreground.
