About John Kerr Airplane II
A square, close-range photograph of a vintage radial aircraft engine seen head on. Nine finned cylinders fan out from the central hub like spokes, each ringed with tight cooling fins and linked by curved pushrod tubes, braided ignition leads and hex fittings. Across the centre runs a two-blade laminated timber propeller, its pale honey and beige grain stripes contrasting with the blackened metal behind it. A bolted aluminium hub plate sits dead centre, held by a ring of round-head fasteners and a locking wire.
The palette is almost entirely charcoal, gunmetal and polished silver, warmed only by the timber blade and a soft grey strip of sky and hangar roof visible at the top corners. Surfaces show real wear: dulled alloy, faint oil staining, scuffed rivets and the brushed sheen of the cowling ring at the lower edge. The character is mechanical and symmetrical, a study in engineering detail rather than flight, calm in tone but dense with texture.
Suits a home office, study or reading nook where the detail can be viewed up close, and works well above a desk or a leather armchair. It pairs with dark timber, black steel shelving, tan leather and exposed brick, and sits comfortably in a masculine bedroom or hallway alongside other transport or industrial prints.
