About Autumn Avenue Mist
Two rows of dark, near-black trunks lean in from the left and right edges, their thin branches meeting overhead to form an arch. Clusters of leaves sit along the upper branches in red, pink, cream, orange and yellow, laid on in short thick knife strokes that stand off the canvas. The path below is a river of gold and orange leaf litter, broken by cool grey-blue patches of wet ground. A single black lamp post stands at the left, with a second further down the avenue.
The far end of the avenue dissolves into pale cream fog, where one small figure walks away from the viewer. Backgrounds are scraped thin and smooth so the loaded, ridged foreground reads as texture you can see from across a room. The painting feels quiet and cool, with the warm leaf colour doing all the talking.
Suits a hallway or entry where the receding path draws the eye down the wall, and works above a sideboard or a sofa in a lounge with grey, cream or soft green walls.
