About Sailing Regatta Impasto
Ten small sailing boats are strung across a wide band of water, their triangular sails built from single loaded strokes of the palette knife. Reds and blues cluster on the left against a burning orange sky, while gold and cream sails stand in the pale centre where light hits the water hardest. On the right the sails turn magenta, black and white against a wall of violet and deep navy. Every sail casts a broken vertical reflection straight down into the surface.
The water is laid in horizontal ridges of paint, thick enough to catch real light across the canvas. It reads as a race seen into the sun, colour doing all the work rather than detail.
The long horizontal shape suits a sofa wall in a living room, a hallway run, or above a sideboard in a dining room. The orange-to-navy sweep works with white or grey walls, timber furniture and linen upholstery, and pairs well with brass lamps, navy cushions or a jute rug.
