About Spring Birch Grove
Dozens of slim birch trunks stand upright across the full width of the canvas, packed close so the eye reads them as a screen rather than a clearing. The trunks are laid in with a palette knife in white, pale grey and cream, each one carrying short dark scars and knot marks along its length. Between and behind them the paint shifts to lime, apple and deep olive green, with brighter yellow-green massed low down where sunlight falls on the undergrowth. The top of the picture opens to a pale grey-white sky broken by scattered leaf clusters.
Every stroke is pulled vertically with a loaded knife, leaving ridges of paint that catch light and give the bark a real, raised edge. The overall character is bright and fresh rather than shadowy, a spring woodland reduced to rhythm, repetition and the contrast of white bark against green.
The repeated vertical trunks suit a wide wall in a living room, entry hall or bedroom, and work well above a long sideboard or sofa. Greens and whites sit easily with timber floors, linen upholstery, rattan and pale walls. It also lifts a corridor or stairwell where you view it side-on and the impasto ridges catch the light.
