About Birch Grove Autumn
A cluster of slender birch trunks rises through the centre of the canvas, their white bark marked with dark scars and flecks of violet and grey. Behind them the sky is a strong cobalt blue, broken by scattered leaves and thin upper branches. On the right, a mass of yellow and orange autumn foliage fills the upper corner and runs down into deeper green and brown shrubs. A pale sandy track crosses the lower third, streaked with blue shadows cast by the trunks.
The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, leaving ridges in the foliage and flat scraped planes across the path. It reads as a bright, high-contrast autumn woodland scene rather than a quiet one.
Suits a living room or hallway with white or pale grey walls, where the cobalt sky can carry across the room. Works above a timber sideboard or a linen sofa, and sits well with rattan, brass lamps and warm oak floors. The portrait shape also fits a narrow stairwell wall or bedroom chimney breast.
