About Birch Grove Songbirds
Four white birch trunks stand close together across the foreground, their bark built up with thick palette-knife strokes and marked with charcoal notches and patches of rust red. Behind them a screen of paler trunks dissolves into a flat sage and putty green background, painted in short vertical dabs. Thin black branches arc out from the trunks in fine, wiry lines, crossing the picture at irregular heights. Five small birds with yellow breasts, grey backs and dark caps perch along these branches, three on the right side, two on the left.
The mood is quiet and decorative rather than literal, with the ridged paint of the trunks doing most of the work and the birds supplying the only bright notes.
Suits a hallway, bedroom or dining room with warm whites, linen and pale timber. The sage green and rust tones sit well against oatmeal walls, rattan chairs and jute rugs. The tall format works above a console table, a chest of drawers or in a narrow stairwell where a wide painting will not fit.
