About Autumn Creek
A narrow creek enters at the bottom of the upright canvas and runs back into a stand of autumn trees. The water is laid in with horizontal knife strokes of pale blue, white and rusty brown, catching reflections from the banks either side. Those banks are packed with short, thick dabs of scarlet, orange and yellow that read as low shrubs and fallen leaves. Beyond them a sandy track curves up past a slim, dark-trunked tree carrying loose red foliage, with taller gold and coral trees crowding the left side against a washed blue-white sky.
The paint sits high off the canvas in ridges and flat knife planes, so the colour has edges and catches the light. The mood is warm and bright rather than melancholy, a crisp sunny day at the peak of the turn.
Works in a living room above a low sideboard, in a hallway, or beside a staircase where its upright shape fits a narrow wall. The orange and red sit well with timber floors, tan leather, cream linen and rattan, and it lifts a room with plain white or soft grey walls.
