About Autumn Lake Cottage
A tall birch with gold and orange foliage rises up the left side of this upright landscape, its pale trunks crossing a bank of scarlet shrubs. Below, a flat stretch of water reflects the far bank in streaks of rust, mauve and white. Across the lake a small cottage with white walls and a bright red roof sits among yellowing trees, with faint blue hills behind. The foreground bank is laid in with thick knife strokes of yellow, olive and warm brown.
The sky is worked in soft cream and pink with a lilac tint at the top, painted thinly against the heavy, ridged paint of the ground. It is a calm, warm-toned autumn scene, more about colour and texture than detail.
Suits a hallway, stairwell or dining room where the upright shape fits a narrow wall. The gold, rust and cream tones work with timber furniture, cane, linen and warm white or clay-coloured walls, and sit well beside brass lamps or a dark timber sideboard in a country or traditional room.
