About Golden Birch Grove
A row of slender birch trunks stands across the full width of the canvas, some straight, some leaning, their bark built up in thick white palette-knife strokes broken by charcoal and black notches. Above them, clusters of yellow and lemon leaves are dabbed on in short flecks, with a few warmer ochre and rust marks near the centre. The background is a pale grey-blue wash, softly blurred, suggesting mist and further trees deeper in the grove. Thin dark twigs are drawn in with the edge of the knife.
The mood is cool and quiet, with the bright yellow foliage lifting an otherwise pale, wintry scene. It reads as calm and decorative rather than dramatic.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, a bed head, or a hallway console. The pale grey ground sits easily with white or light grey walls, oak and ash timber, linen upholstery and wool rugs.
