About Mediterranean Steps
A tall, narrow view looks down a paved stairway that steps from the foreground to a blue bay in the distance. On the left stand stone houses with red tiled roofs, shuttered windows and a red-and-white striped awning over a doorway. Beds of flowers crowd both edges of the path in yellow, crimson and violet, painted as thick dabs of colour. Two slim palms lean in from the right above a cluster of white houses, and a pale sail sits on the water under a light blue sky.
Almost all of the paint is laid with a knife, so the paving, walls and blossoms sit in raised ridges that catch the light. It reads as a warm, sunlit holiday scene with strong depth from foreground steps to distant headland.
The tall, narrow shape suits a stairwell wall, a hallway end, a narrow space beside a door or between two windows. It works with terracotta tiles, timber floors, cane and rattan furniture, and warm white or sand-coloured walls. Pairs well with blue linen, potted olives or ferns, and brass or aged bronze fittings.
