About Rearing Stallion
A pale horse rears on its hind legs in the centre of a square canvas, body turned side-on with the head lifted and the forelegs folded high in front of the chest. The coat is laid in thick cream and butter-yellow knife strokes, with charcoal and deep brown marking the belly, hocks and hooves. The mane breaks into white flicks above the neck and the tail curls down in one sweeping ribbon of white and grey paint.
Behind the horse the background is scraped flat in broad slabs of grey, dusty pink and a touch of sea green, with a band of darker grey and white below suggesting ground. The painting reads as movement caught in a few decisive strokes rather than a detailed animal study.
Suits a hallway, dining room or living room where a single square work can sit on its own. The soft grey and pink background works with pale walls, oak and rattan furniture, and linen upholstery.
