About Land in Nowhere
The canvas is split into three soft bands. A pale grey sky, almost colourless, fills the top third and blurs at its edges. Below it a low violet ridge runs the full width, its crest dipping to the left and rising again at the right, painted with no hard outline so it fades into the sky. The bottom two thirds is an open plain of burnt orange and ochre, broken by two white horizontal streaks and a thin olive line that crosses left to right like a track through grass.
The paint surface on the plain is heavily worked, a pitted, granular skin that catches light, while the sky and ridge are thin and smooth by comparison. It reads as a wide, empty inland country seen at distance, calm and warm rather than dramatic.
Suits warm rooms with timber, leather or clay tones: above a tan sofa, a sideboard in a dining room, or along a hallway where its horizontal bands can run with the wall. Pairs with rust cushions, linen and brass. The pale grey sky keeps it from crowding a room painted white or soft stone. Browse more landscape oil paintings, panoramic wall art, the Statton Collection.
