About Pilbara Outback Sunset

A single bare-branched tree stands right of centre on red desert sand, its dark trunk splitting into two leaning limbs and a fine lattice of twigs that catches the last light. The ground runs in bands of rust-red earth and clumped spinifex and dry grass in olive and straw tones, with faint tyre-like furrows in the sand near the base of the tree. Behind it the horizon is flat and low, broken only by a distant dark rise and a line of scrub.

The upper two-thirds is sky: streaked cirrus cloud shifting from deep violet-blue at the top through mauve and rose to a band of orange and yellow sitting directly on the horizon. The character here is quiet and wide open, the kind of still outback evening where colour does all the work and one tree carries the whole frame.

The violet and rust palette works over a bed head in a bedroom, along a hallway, or above a low sideboard in a living room. It suits earthy interiors with terracotta, tan leather, rattan and linen, and sits well with warm white or clay-coloured walls.
