About Left Alone
A shallow boat-shaped bowl sits centred on a stone ledge, painted in bronze and brown with a burnished sheen along its rim. Pale cream orchid blooms rest inside it and trail over the left edge, each flower drawn with soft grey-brown shadow in the throat. One single orchid lies apart on the ledge at lower right. Behind the bowl, two carved stone blocks show scrolling relief patterns in shadowy brown, framing the composition on either side.
The whole picture is held in one narrow range of sepia, tan and cream, with light falling from above onto the wall and the bowl's near side. The background is worked in dry, scumbled layers so the surface reads like aged plaster, while the flowers are painted more smoothly and carry the brightest tone. It is a quiet, restrained still life, warm rather than dramatic, with the stray single bloom giving it its sense of stillness.
Suits bedrooms, hallways and dining rooms with cream, beige or limewashed walls. It sits well above a timber sideboard or bedhead, and pairs with linen, rattan, aged brass and travertine. The narrow sepia palette keeps it calm beside other earthy art, and the square shape works neatly between two wall lights. Browse more floral art, the Statton Collection, brown and earthy art.
