About Life Before Me
A tall portrait canvas built from broad vertical blocks. The centre is held by a deep red field that darkens to near-black along its left edge, with a scatter of thin black drips and scratched lines running down its middle like a broken branch. To the right sit two navy rectangles, one crossing the top with a row of short white dashes beneath it, the other a solid blue square with visible dry-brush streaking. The left third is cream and ochre, striped with a thin dark blue line.
The paint is laid on flat with a wide brush and then scraped back, so underlayers of ochre and white show through in patches. A second row of small white marks appears low on the red, near a black stroke. The character is bold and graphic, with the red doing all the shouting while the cream side keeps the picture calm.
Works over a low sideboard or sofa in a white or grey living room, where the red reads as the single accent. Suits loft-style spaces with timber floors, black steel shelving and leather seating. Pairs with navy cushions, brass lamps and plain linen. Also good in a stairwell or a home office where a vertical shape fits.
