About Lifeless
A single row of trees runs across the upper third of the canvas, their canopies merging into one soft mass of ochre, rust and deep burgundy. Thin dark trunks show in the gaps beneath, dotted along a pale horizon line. Above them the sky is a flat wash of lilac-grey with cream edges, kept plain so the foliage carries all the detail. The canopies are built from short stippled dabs and dry-brushed flecks that catch light across the surface rather than describing individual leaves.
Below the tree line, the field fills more than half the picture in warm golden ochre, worked with a heavy grainy texture and a slightly darker band near the lower edge. The painting is quiet and reduced, closer to a colour field with a horizon than a detailed rural scene, and its warmth comes almost entirely from the contrast of orange earth against cool sky.
Suits a warm neutral or off-white wall in a living room, dining room or hallway, and works over a timber sideboard or a leather sofa. Pairs with rattan, linen, brass lamps and terracotta pots.
