About Surfboard Summer
A row of upright surfboards fills the foreground across the full width of the canvas, tails planted in pale sand, tips reaching two thirds up the picture. Each board is built from short dabs and scraped patches of colour: crimson and maroon on the far left, cobalt and turquoise beside it, then violet, gold, magenta and white blocks that read as blotches rather than patterns. A clear gap near the centre opens onto flat sand, a green and white striped beach umbrella, two small red timber chairs and a thin line of sea.
Above, a pale blue sky carries a few flat cumulus clouds painted in thick white strokes. One tiny standing figure in blue is sketched between the boards. The mood is bright and holiday-like, loose in handling but tidy in its arrangement, with the heavy paint on the boards contrasting the smooth, thinly brushed sky.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, sideboard or bed head in a coastal or holiday home, and works in hallways and rumpus rooms where the width can be seen from a distance.
