About Grey Giant
A bull elephant fills the whole canvas, facing forward and cropped so the ears run off both edges. The painting is worked entirely in greys, from near-black in the shadowed left ear to soft off-white at the top corners. Thick dabs of pale paint sit across the domed forehead and down the bridge of the trunk, catching light like sun on wet hide. Below, the trunk is drawn with fine curved lines that mark each wrinkle, and two short, pale tusks angle in from either side.
The eyes are small and dark, set deep under heavy brows, and the right eye is the sharpest detail in the picture. Soft, smudged brushwork in the background keeps all attention on the face. It is a quiet, heavy, straight-on animal portrait rather than a dramatic wildlife scene.
Works above a sofa in a grey or charcoal living room, or on a white wall in a hallway where you pass close enough to see the raised paint. Suits timber, leather and linen, black-framed photography, and safari or nature-themed rooms. Also strong in an office or a boy's bedroom above a low bookshelf.
