About Crimson Poppy Pair
Two large poppies fill the square canvas, one behind the other, cropped close so the petals run off the top and right edges. The petals are painted in scarlet and deep crimson with veins of orange and golden yellow running from the centres outward, and thick cream-white strokes sit along the inner petal edges where the light catches. Each flower has a dark brown seed head, ringed with short dry-brushed spokes. Slim reddish stems drop toward the lower edge.
The background is left loose: olive and grey above, warm tan below with vertical drips of pale blue and white running down like wet paint. Paint is applied heavily with a knife and brush, so ridges of colour stand off the surface. The character is bold and close-up, warm rather than delicate, with strong colour doing most of the work.
Suits a dining room, entry wall or kitchen nook where a hit of red is wanted against white or pale grey paint. Works above a sideboard or a timber bench, and pairs with brass or copper fittings, linen upholstery and warm oak. In a square hallway it sits well as a single centred piece.
