The sun sits low on the right horizon, just above a dark headland, and sends pale rays up through an orange and violet sky. Thin bands of cloud glow red and gold along the horizon. A faint line of distant mountains runs across the middle of the frame, the Mani peninsula in southern Greece.
In the foreground, dark rounded rocks and grey boulders spread across a pebble beach. A shallow tidal pool on the right reflects the orange sky. On the left the sea has been softened by a long exposure into a pale, silky mist around the rocks. It is a photograph with deep contrast between warm sky and cool stone.
