A dark bay mare stands side-on in a grassy paddock, her head turned back over her shoulder to look off to the right. Both she and the small foal at her side wear teal halters. The foal is a shade lighter and stands close against her flank, its head turned the same way, white socks showing on its back legs.
Behind them a timber post-and-wire fence runs across the frame, with tall pale grass growing along its base. Low trees sit on the distant horizon under a wide, washed-out sky. The photograph has a soft, bleached morning haze, with muted greens and greys and a lot of empty pale space above the horses.
