About Mediterranean Café
Three slender palm trunks run from the top edge to the paved plaza, their dark fronds spread against a patch of strong blue sky. Behind them a coral-red building carries blue-and-white striped awnings and a small balcony with a blue railing, while an ochre building with shuttered windows sits to the left. Cream umbrellas shade small tables dressed in red and white cloths, with pale blue chairs pushed in beside them. A terracotta pot of pink and orange blossom fills the lower left corner.
The paving is laid on in thick horizontal strokes of white, pale green and turquoise, so the ground reads as glare and reflected light rather than stone. Paint sits high off the canvas throughout, with ridges of colour catching real light along the awnings and flowers. It is a warm, sunlit scene built almost entirely with the palette knife, bright and loosely handled rather than detailed.
Suits a kitchen, dining room or café-style breakfast nook, and works above a sideboard or a long timber table. The coral and turquoise sit well with terracotta tiles, rattan chairs, white walls and potted greenery. Good beside an espresso bench or in a holiday-house living room that already carries warm earthy tones. Browse more Mediterranean art, orange art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
