About Melancholy Five
An avenue runs from the lower edge of the canvas towards a pale triumphal arch set at the centre horizon. Tall Haussmann-style apartment blocks with rows of shuttered windows rise on both sides, their ground floors fitted with striped cafe awnings and glazed shopfronts. A cluster of small dark figures walks the roadway, some carrying bundles, a few on bicycles, with a horse-drawn cart at the right. A street lamp stands on the left kerb. The whole scene is worked in black, charcoal and off-white only.
The sky is built up in thick palette-knife strokes of grey and white, and the wet road carries vertical smears of light reflected from the buildings. Foliage above the left awnings is dabbed on in short pale flecks. Figures are suggested with single loaded strokes rather than drawn detail. The mood is overcast and quiet, a rainy city afternoon held in tonal greys rather than colour.
Suits a hallway, dining room or home office where a single tonal picture can sit against white, grey or charcoal walls. It works with black-framed photography, chrome or brushed steel fittings, dark timber furniture and linen upholstery, and gives a monochrome room a focal point without adding colour.
