The Melbourne skyline fills the upper half of the frame, seen from the south bank of the Yarra River. Glass and concrete towers cluster at centre, with a dark ribbed high-rise and a stepped tower with a pointed crown standing above the rest. To the left, the twin brown spires of St Paul's Cathedral rise beside a domed roof and a row of low heritage buildings screened by palms and leafy green trees. On the right, the pale stone arches of Princes Bridge carry the road across the water.

The sky is the loudest part of the picture: deep blue at the top, broken by streaked grey cloud, fading to apricot and pale gold on the right horizon. Below, the river runs slate grey-green, with warm gold and amber reflections stretched into long vertical streaks and small points of light from the bank. The image is sharp and detailed, with even, natural tones and no heavy colour treatment.
