About Amber Monolith
A portrait canvas built in warm amber and burnt ochre, worked with a plaster-like surface that catches light in small ridges and pits. Two rectangles of pale gold sit in the upper half, their surfaces printed with a woven hessian weave and their edges left frayed and uneven. Behind the smaller left panel, a dark oxblood square shows through like a shadow. Dropping from the lower edge of that panel, a slender ribbed column of gold runs down to the bottom of the canvas, drawn in fine parallel lines.
The mood is quiet and architectural, closer to a weathered wall than a picture. Warmth and restraint carry it, with all the interest in surface rather than colour contrast.
Works in rooms with timber, leather and linen: a living room above a tan sofa, a hallway end wall, a dining room beside oak furniture. The vertical format suits narrow spaces between doorways.
