About Marigold Horizon
The canvas is split into two broad fields of colour. The upper half is a warm marigold yellow, laid on thickly so the surface reads as rough plaster with fine scratched lines near the top edge. Below it runs a narrow red band, scored with horizontal grooves where the brush handle has dragged through wet paint. The lower half is a flatter orange, mottled and pitted across its whole width. Two marks interrupt the yellow: a small dark maroon dot at the left, and a raised white disc at the right, spiralled and ringed in black.
It behaves like a landscape reduced to its bare parts, a sun and a horizon, without naming any place. The heavy surface texture is as much the subject as the colour.
Works in a sunlit living room with white or sand walls, above a low timber sideboard, or in a hallway where the red band can be read from a distance. Pairs with rattan, terracotta pots, linen in cream, and brass or black metal fittings. Also suits a north-facing dining room. Browse more orange art, the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings.
