About Sapphire Panels
Two stacked rectangles sit on a red ground in an upright format. The upper block is a large deep sapphire-to-navy square that fills most of the canvas, its surface broken by flecks of lighter blue and dark pitting. Below it a shorter, wider rectangle reads almost black with a cool blue undertone. A band of red frames both blocks on the left, right and top, while the bottom edge warms into bright orange. Edges are soft and slightly ragged rather than ruled, so the colours bleed a little into one another.
The whole surface carries a dense, pebbled texture, as if the paint has been stippled and dragged so light catches thousands of small raised points. It is a quiet, heavy painting built on the contrast between cool blue-black masses and a hot red border.
Suits a lounge room with pale walls, a hallway end wall, or a study where a single strong colour note is wanted. The upright shape works above a console table, a sideboard or a narrow stair wall. Pairs with charcoal linen, tan leather, brass lamps and dark timber floors. Browse more abstract oil paintings, the Statton Collection.
