About City in the Mist
A low horizon runs across the lower third of the canvas, with a small cluster of buildings gathered just right of centre. Above them the sky is a broad wash of dusty pink and mauve, warmed by streaks of apricot and pale gold along the upper right. The city itself is reduced to short blocks and two thin vertical masts, with dabs of red, blue, yellow and dark green suggesting windows, signage and figures on a waterfront. Below, slate grey water carries vertical smears of yellow and orange reflection.
paint is dragged and scumbled in thin horizontal strokes so the canvas weave shows through the haze, while the buildings are built from thicker, blunt touches of the knife and brush. The character is quiet and half-seen: a harbour city dissolving into evening light rather than a place you could name.
Suits a living room above a low sideboard, a bedroom over the bedhead, or a hallway where the pink and grey can soften white walls. Works with linen upholstery, oak or walnut timber, brass lamps and pale terracotta or clay-toned cushions. Good company for other quiet abstracts rather than bold graphic prints.
