About Marigold Meadow
Four large marigold-like blooms sit in a loose diagonal down the portrait canvas, from a soft amber flower at upper left to a deep orange one at lower right. Each head is built from short, loaded strokes of paint that fan outward into ragged petals, with pale cream highlights catching the ridges and small grey-green centres. Thin dark stems drop away beneath the flowers, some wavering and interrupted, one running almost to the bottom edge. Ghosted shapes of further blooms and stems sit faintly behind them.
The background moves from buttery yellow at the top through chalky white in the lower middle, scraped and dabbed so the weave of the canvas shows through. A hint of soft green drifts behind the top flower. It is a warm, light-filled painting with just enough texture and rough edging to keep it from feeling sweet.
Warm and easy to live with in a sunlit dining room, hallway or bedroom. It lifts white, cream and pale grey walls, and sits well with timber furniture, rattan, linen in oatmeal or sage, and terracotta pots. Hang it above a sideboard or a bedhead where the vertical stems have room to fall. Browse more floral art, orange art, the Statton Collection.
