About Antique Wild Roses
A loose spray of wild roses sits left of centre on a warm sepia ground that looks like aged paper. Six or seven open blossoms are painted in soft cream and white, each with a small dark stamen centre and a blush of apricot on the outer petals. Around them, rounded leaves in olive and khaki are laid down as flat, soft-edged shapes, some bleeding into the background. Thin dark branches run out to the right, ending in fine twigs and a scatter of small buds.
The paint is thinned and washed in the manner of watercolour, with soft blooms, tonal drifts and a few darker speckles across the upper field. It reads as quiet and faded, a floral study with the calm of an old botanical page rather than a bright bouquet.
Suits bedrooms, hallways and sitting rooms with warm neutral, cream or oatmeal walls. It works above a timber chest of drawers, beside linen bedding, or in a reading corner with rattan and aged brass. Pair it with other soft tonal florals, or hang it alone where the sepia ground can sit against pale paintwork. Browse more floral art, brown and earthy art, the Statton Collection.
