About Morning
A round whitewashed windmill stands at the right of the canvas, its tapering stone tower painted in cool greys and off-whites with a mossy olive-green thatched cone for a roof. Eight bare timber spars radiate from a central hub, fanned out across the sky with fine rigging lines strung between them. Below and to the left, angular grey rooftops step down into shadow. A second pale wall crops the right edge. Two dark doorways cut into the tower base.
The sky fills most of the picture: a band of salmon pink and apricot low on the horizon, softening upward through mauve into a heavy slate grey. Brushwork in the sky is smooth and blended with no visible strokes, while the tower and roof carry thicker, drier paint that catches the light. The rigging is drawn with thin, near-hairline marks. The overall character is still and hushed, a quiet first-light scene with the mill silhouetted before the day begins.
Suits a bedroom, hallway or dining room where you want calm rather than colour. The pink and grey palette works with white or pale grey walls, linen upholstery and warm timber furniture. Pairs well with coastal ceramics, olive greens and other Mediterranean scenes. Good above a sideboard or bedhead. Browse more Mediterranean art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
