A tangle of exposed roots spreads across a dirt slope in the lower half of this forest photograph. A thick, moss-covered trunk leans through the centre, its bark showing patches of warm orange where the moss has worn away. Smaller roots curl and branch over the ground like pale ropes, leading the eye up from the bottom edge.
The colours are heavily toned, with teal, icy blue and grey-green covering the moss, leaves and branches, set against rust-brown soil and bark. Bright, hazy light breaks through the canopy at the top corners and washes out the background trunks. Ferns and small leaves crowd the foreground, and the grain of the moss gives the image a soft, textured feel.
