A large nautilus shell fills the centre of a square composition, turned so its opening faces the upper right. The striped inner chambers are deep indigo on cream, while the smooth outer curve fades from cream to soft blue-violet with fine growth lines running toward the spiral.
Behind it sits a dark navy sea chart in faded beige lettering. Visible words include "L'OCEAN", "Norwege", "Suede", "Espagne", "Portugal", "Europe", "Languedoc", "Provence" and "Mer de Portugal". A cartouche with two sailing ships sits top left, and a compass rose sits at the lower right, with fine rhumb lines crossing the coastlines.
