A group of women and children gather apples in an orchard. Two women hold out a large cream sheet between them while a man on a timber ladder in the tree at upper left shakes the branches, and apples tumble through the air toward the cloth. A girl in a pink dress crouches beside a full basket of red fruit.
The grass is green and flecked with small yellow flowers, and a pale dirt track curves across the lower right. Fallen apples lie scattered on the ground, and a stooped woman and a child with a basket work in the background. Light filters through the leaves in soft, warm patches. The look is a realistic figurative painting in earthy greens, browns and cream, with red accents from the fruit and a bodice.
