A grey and black tabby cat fills the frame, shown head and shoulders and turned slightly to the left. Its pale blue eyes have narrow dark pupils and are the sharpest point in the picture. Dark stripes run down the forehead between the ears, and a rust-brown patch sits across the nose and around the nostrils.
The fur is built from fine layered strokes in grey, black, white and warm tan, which gives the look of coloured pencil on paper. Long white whiskers sweep out across the left side and the cheeks. The background is a soft, mottled silver-grey with a faint paper grain, and the chest falls away into deep black at the bottom right.
