Two long fern fronds rise from the bottom edge of a portrait frame, leaning slightly toward each other in a loose V. Each frond has a central rib with rows of narrow leaflets stepping down either side, tapering to a fine point near the top. The left frond is slimmer and curves gently, while the right one is broader and fuller.
The whole image is tonal: cream and pale butter shapes on a slightly lighter cream paper ground, with only faint edges separating the leaves from the background. The surface looks like an impression or relief print, with fine texture along the leaflets. A small pencil-style mark reading "MMB 1/1" sits in the lower right corner.
