About Paris at Nuit
A wide Paris boulevard runs from the foreground into a soft grey haze, with the Eiffel Tower standing in silhouette at the centre right of the horizon. Tall Haussmann-style buildings press in on both sides, their windows and shopfronts glowing amber behind a yellow café awning on the left and a pink parasol on the right. A bare young tree rises through the middle of the composition. Figures walk towards the viewer, one in a bright red coat, their reflections streaking down the wet pavement in long vertical strokes.
The paint is thin and blended in the sky and distance, then looser and wetter across the road, where dabs of ochre, rust and grey suggest puddles rather than describe them. It is a quiet, damp-evening picture: warm lights against cool grey, with the red coat as the single strong note of colour.
Suits a hallway, dining room or lounge with warm neutral or grey walls, and works well above a sideboard or a leather sofa. The amber window lights pick up brass lamps, timber furniture and tan leather, while the grey sky sits comfortably with charcoal and linen upholstery.
