About Paris Paris
The Eiffel Tower stands at the centre of the composition, softened into a grey-brown silhouette against a sky of pale ochre and cream that has been dragged on with a wide brush. Tall Haussmann-style buildings line both sides, painted in deep browns, near-black and rust reds, their shopfronts and upper windows flecked with small dabs of warm yellow and orange that read as lit lamps. Street trees sit in loose green-grey masses along the left kerb.
Figures are suggested with short vertical strokes in dark tones, with a pale horse-drawn carriage in the left middle ground. The wet road carries long horizontal smears of brown, grey and amber that mirror the lights above. The character is dusk in a large city, warm and slightly blurred, more about light on wet paving than architectural detail.
The long horizontal shape suits a wall above a sideboard, a three-seater sofa or a bedhead, and works well down a hallway. Its browns, ochres and greys sit comfortably with timber furniture, leather seating, brass lamps and cream or clay-coloured walls. A good fit for dining rooms and studies where the lighting is warm.
