Rounded pebbles fill the lower half of this square black and white photograph, packed tightly from the foreground to a low horizon. The stones vary from pale, smooth ovals to darker, mottled ones, and a single black rock sits slightly left of centre. Their wet-looking surfaces catch soft, even light.
Above the stones the sea is a flat, pale band, so smooth it looks like mist, with no visible waves. A dark grey sky grades down into it, fading to near white at the horizon. The long exposure look leaves the upper half quiet, which sets off the busy texture of the beach below.
