A single spiral shell fills the square frame on a plain white background, tilted so the pointed tip sits at the upper right and the long tapered canal runs down to the lower left. The image looks like an X-ray, so the shell is see-through and its inner structure shows.
Dark grey and black lines trace the whorls, the central column and the curved inner walls, while the wide body whorl fades to soft pale grey with fine ridges across its surface. The tones stay strictly black, grey and white, with no colour. It reads as a photographic still life with a scientific feel.
