A black and white photograph taken from the middle of a long pier, looking straight down its length. The deck runs to a vanishing point near the centre, with a single seam down the middle and worn patches in the surface. Pale posts and rails line both sides, getting smaller as they recede.
At the far end a tall crane stands against the horizon. Calm water spreads out on both sides under a wide sky of layered grey cloud, brighter near the centre where the light breaks through. A small electrical box hangs from the right-hand rail. The tones are soft, with deep greys on the deck and pale highlights in the sky.
