Six red poppies stand on thin pale green stems, seen from low down so the blooms rise against the sky. The largest pair sits top right with ruffled, glossy petals and dark centres. A deep red flower on the left shows a yellow-cream centre, and a pinker bud sits at the far left edge.
The sky and background are built from small square dabs of sky blue, white, cream and pale yellow, which gives a mosaic effect. Below, teal and green leaves in thick, chunky strokes fill the base, with touches of purple and navy. The brushwork looks heavily textured, like palette knife work, in a square format.
