About Poppy I
A single oriental poppy fills almost the whole square, its wide petals opening in scarlet and warm orange with paler creases where the light catches the folds. At the centre sits a dark seed head ringed by a dense black fringe of stamens. To the right a closed bud in olive and lime green leans on its own stem, and below the flower a green stalk carries deeply cut, toothed grey-green leaves that spread across the lower corners. A small signature sits at the lower right.
The background is a mottled wash of ochre, beige and soft brown that darkens towards the corners, giving the print the look of an aged wall or old plaster. The character is calm and traditional: one bold flower, warm earthy surrounds, nothing else competing for attention.
Suits a dining room, entry hall or bedroom with warm neutral walls, timber furniture and linen. The ochre ground sits well beside terracotta pots, rattan and brass, and the square shape works above a sideboard, a bedhead or in a bathroom.
