A black and white photograph looks along the side of a long timber pier running up the right of the frame. Cross-braced pilings fall away in a steady rhythm, their surfaces cracked and streaked, with dark barnacle growth around the bases where they meet the water.
A long exposure has turned the sea into smooth, milky grey with only faint ripples near the posts. A heavy, even cloud layer fills the sky, and a low strip of distant land sits on the horizon. A small tower stands at the pier end, and a tiny ship sits far off on the left.
