A single magnolia bud sits right of centre, its petals still folded into a pointed, tulip-like shape. Tiny water droplets cling to the petal surfaces and catch the light as small bright points. The photograph is black and white with a slightly warm, sepia-leaning tone in the greys.
Leaves fan out below and to the sides of the bud, their veined surfaces also dotted with rain. Most of the frame is deep black, so the bud and nearest leaves emerge from the darkness while the rear foliage fades out of focus. The left half of the image is left empty and shadowed.
