A single red poppy fills the upper half of a portrait canvas, its ruffled petals folding over one another in thick, saturated strokes. The centre shows a small yellow-green seed head ringed by dark stamens flecked with green. The bloom leans slightly to the right on a long, straight stem.
Everything sits against solid black, so the red and the fresh lime green of the stem and serrated leaf stand out sharply. A thin curved stalk on the right carries a closed green bud that droops downward. Brush marks are visible in the petals and leaf, giving the flower a flat, graphic, painterly look.
