A red flamingo fills the portrait frame, its head bowed and its heavy bill tucked down against its chest. The bill is pale pink at the base with a black tip, and a single yellow eye with a dark pupil looks out from the saturated red feathers of the face. The drawing has fine, visible strokes of pencil.
Behind the bird, long loose plumes fan out in orange, yellow, coral and soft pink, like flames against a flat turquoise-blue background. The body feathers at the bottom are layered in deep red and orange with darker shadows between them. The paper grain shows through in the sky, giving the piece a soft, textured finish.
