A black horse walks across a stable floor from left to right with its head lowered and turned toward the viewer. White socks mark its legs and a white blaze runs down its face. A long black mane and tail fall in glossy strands, and a thin pink rein trails from a woven bridle at the muzzle.
The saddle cloth is crimson velvet edged with gold braid, topped with a pink padded saddle. Behind the horse, a mottled wall shifts from dark blue to violet, and a brass horse-head fixture with a ring hangs on a red disc at upper right. Warm honey floorboards catch the light and the horse casts a soft shadow. The look is a traditional oil-style painting with visible canvas texture.
