About Serene Waters
A narrow canal runs from the lower centre of the canvas back into the distance, flanked by tall buildings on both sides. On the left, a cream and ochre house with blue shutters and a dark red timber door sits behind a leafy tree and a stone quay. On the right, balconies with white balustrades front walls washed in pale green and teal. Two gondolas rest on the water, one dark with a gold-tipped prow, the other warm brown. Beyond the rooftops a square bell tower and a small dome rise against a blue and pink sky.
The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, so the quay stones, roof tiles and foliage sit in raised ridges, while short horizontal strokes break the canal into blue, white and ochre reflections. The mood is quiet late afternoon, with the street emptied of all but two small figures at the water's edge.
Suits a hallway, stairwell or dining room where a tall upright picture fits between doorways. The ochre, teal and terracotta sit well with timber furniture, cane, linen and terrazzo or tiled floors, and it works beside other European scenes in a group. Good above a sideboard or a narrow console table. Browse more Mediterranean art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
